CPD

Continuing Professional Development

Introduction to CPD Activities:
Globally, CPD has been considered as the means of building the capacities of medical professionals to improve their knowledge and skills in catering to their patients for quality service delivery that will yield better patient outcomes. In the subregion, Liberia is among a few countries that are lagging this process.

Many Countries in the region has made the process of presenting a Continue Education Unit (CEU) to the board or council to qualify for license renewal. Liberia developed her first CPD guideline in 2017 with the aim of implementation there on. This was only taken on by the Liberian Board for Nursing and Midwifery (LBNM). In 2023 the regulatory bodies decided to review and revise the guidelines ensuring that it was in line with what the region had on going.

Nursing Online has identified that there is a need for providing CPD that care providers can attend and obtain CEUs and they can use that to improve the system and the outcome of patients. Liberia does not have a mandatory system for care providers to present CEU before renewal of their licenses. It is just a few years that the regulatory bodies were able to collaborate with the Ministry and other Health partners to review and revise the guidelines and as of 2025 April, the boards are going to be requesting CEUs before the insurance of licenses.

Thinking far ahead Nursing Online conducted a Needs Assessment in the western region of Liberia. With the gap identified the organization decided to provide CPD for nurses, midwives and other health professionals in rural Liberia beginning with the western region. The LBNM has approved and certificated the Nursing Online team to provide CPD in the western area.
